The Big C is a Showtime original television series created by Darlene Hunt which premiered on August 16, 2010. It drew the largest audience for a Showtime original series premiere in eight years. On September 20, The Big C was renewed for a second season which premiered on June 27, 2011.
The show follows Cathy Jamison, a reserved suburban wife and mother whose recent stage-IV melanoma diagnosis forces her to really begin to live for the first time in her adult life. At first she chooses to keep the fact of her terminal illness secret from her family, behaving in ways they find puzzling and increasingly bizarre as she finds new freedom to express herself. As the show progresses, Cathy allows her family and some new friends to support her as she copes with her illness, and finds both humor and pathos in the many idioscyncratic relationships in her life.
Meanwhile, it's fall on THE BIG C season 2 and Cathy has become an all-out warrior in her Stage 4 melanoma fight and Paul (Oliver Platt) has stepped up to become her "cancierge." A new oncologist (special guest appearance by Alan Alda) is on the case with some, experimental treatments that might buy her some time since son Adam (Gabriel Basso), who is also progressing into a bigger brat to cope with his mother's illness, could still use some fine tuning. He's put in his place a bit by Andrea (special guest star Gabourey Sidibe), who is now growing even closer to the Jamisons. And although Cathy's brother Sean (John Benjamin Hickey) is angry at his sister for hiding her condition, he's finding a sliver of hope in the future now that his girlfriend Rebecca (special guest star Cynthia Nixon) is pregnant.
